What Zoetrope shows

Zoetrope sets three rings of small lacquered sculptures on a varnished wooden plate, each one slightly different from its neighbour. The plate moves in exact steps, to the tempo: at each step every sculpture takes the place of the one before, and the eye sees a flower opening, a drop bouncing or a heart beating, with no flashing at all.

The outer ring loops its animation on every beat, the middle one every two beats, the inner one every four: all three meet on the bar. One animation changes on each phrase, among seven (flower, drop, twist, heart, wave, planet, dancer), and on the drop everything speeds up for four bars.
