Music licensing in a bar

Playing music in a venue open to the public requires licenses, paid to the organizations that represent songwriters, artists and labels. That’s true whether or not the visuals come from Halofloor: Halofloor does not replace these licenses.

In the US, public performance rights go through performing rights organizations, notably ASCAP and BMI. In France, SACEM grants the authorization to bars and cafés. In Spain, notably SGAE.

Consumer streaming subscriptions are generally meant for personal use: check your service’s terms before using it in your venue. Fees depend on the country, the size of the venue and how the music is used; ask the relevant organization.

Halofloor is a web page. It reads what is already playing at your place and turns it into pictures: nothing to install on the screen, nothing to re-import.

Open the console
On the computer, in Chrome. A demo song is already waiting: press play to watch the engine run.
Pick the source
Spotify, Deezer, SoundCloud or Apple Music, your Sonos speakers with Standard, or one of 50,000 radio stations.
Broadcast
One click opens the broadcast screen: drag it onto the TV or the projector. The console stays at hand to steer.

Which plan is for professional use?

The Pro plan is designed for venues open to the public and hired pros: commercial use, business invoice, priority support. It opens soon: in the console, one click on “Go Pro” signs you up to be told.

Does someone need to run the screen during service?

The screen runs itself during service: once started, the visuals change on their own with every song. The computer just stays plugged in with sleep mode off.

Does the screen match the mood of the night?

The screen follows the music that’s playing: laid-back worlds on quiet songs, more color and motion when the sound picks up. With Standard, the energy setting leans toward calm or intense.

What if nobody wants to run the playlist?

A radio station does the job nicely: pick one of the 50,000 and the visuals follow it all night. Radio stations are included in the free plan, with no account.

What about music licensing?

Playing music in a venue open to the public falls under your country’s licensing rules, whether the visuals come from Halofloor or not. In the US that means organizations such as ASCAP and BMI; in France, SACEM; in Spain, notably SGAE. Halofloor does not replace these licenses.
