What Bubbles shows
Bubbles floats dozens of soap bubbles, from tiny to giant, in front of a blurred club: coloured bokeh and the artist’s name in neon at the back. Every bubble has the real colours of a soap film: magenta, green, gold and blue, worked out from the thickness of the film, which thins at the top, runs downwards and swirls, and which shift with the viewing angle. Nearly transparent in the middle, a bubble turns coloured and glossy at its rim, where it reflects the neon and a bright window.
The bubbles drift, rise gently and bounce off each other. On the beats one or two bubbles burst: the film tears open from a point in a few hundredths of a second and throws out a crown of droplets that fall; the bokeh pulses. Every bar new bubbles are born at the bottom of the screen; every phrase the club’s colours change. In the most energetic passages, on the drop, ten bubbles burst in a cascade, then a swarm of small bubbles takes off. For pop, melodic house, disco, electropop and funk.
